There are not many exciting action games available for Mac OS after the 2004 Christmas season. These days, only simple puzzle or arcade games are available for us except a few. I just double-clicked on the game icon of Zuma Deluxe from Big Fish Games by accident. But whoa… This arcade game can be quite addictive. I played for 6 to 7 straight hours yesterday. I’m pretty much committed to playing only action and RTS games. But this game is fun even for me! By the way, Zuma Deluxe is available for both Mac and PC.
After launching the game and arriving at the main menu enter Adventure. (See Screenshot 01.) Then enter Temple of Zlikulkan. (See Screenshot 02.) The first stage contains 5 levels. When you clear all the levels, then the entrance to Stage 2 will open.
The rules are very simple. Basically, you will only use your Mouse. At the center of the screen, there is always a frog. That’s the only game character that you control. You can use your Mouse to rotate it. If you press the left button, the frog will shoot a ball. Press the right button to switch balls only between current and next ones. Balls will come down along the rail and eventually reach the other end. When they get close to the other end, the skull door opens. When a ball falls there, the frog will die. So your job is to stop the balls from reaching the other end. Balls will keep coming down. If you see the top of the screen, there is a yellow meter. If it’s completely filled with yellow, that means there will be no more new balls coming down.
In order to clear a level, you need to destroy all the balls. The frog will set a ball in any color in its mouth. When 3 or more balls in the same color get together, they will collapse upon your action. For example, see Screenshot 05. The frog has a green ball in its mouth. There are 2 green balls in the 9 o’clock direction. There are also 5 green balls in the 3 o’clock direction. In this case, you should shoot the ball so that it would hit one of the balls in the 3 o’clock direction. If the green balls to the right were preceded by red balls instead of blue ones, your action would be more successful because after losing the green balls in between, you would have one group of red balls colliding with another group of red balls.
There are balls in 4 different colors. If you reach Stage 3 or 4, you will have purple balls. And there are also several different special balls. See Screenshot 07. The frog has acquired Accuracy Ball. If you get it, the frog will have the focus ability for a short time. There is another ball looking like an eye ball in the 3 o’clock direction, right? If you shoot a green ball at this one or the next, they will all explode involving adjacent ones. That will be a great way of reducing balls at a time.
If you are using Mac OS X and have access to a broadband connection, you can download the game and play it for 60 minutes for free. Press Command plus K while Finder is active. When you see the Connect to Server window, enter ftp://ftp.gamehouse.com/pub/ for the server address. Then press Connect.
