Some video compression applications allow you to crop black bars which usually result from the anamorphic transformation. One is ffmpegX. You can do so with DiVA and Open Shiiva. In this video tutorial, we use QuickTime Pro to remove black bars. Having black bars that resulted from the anamorphic transformation leads to inefficient use of bits. Therefore, removing them reduces the file size of video.

We use Adobe Fireworks to create a simple piece of reference matte. You can use any graphic application that comes with basic functions.
