Windows Live POP3: Checking Hotmail Messages with Apple Mail

Mac video tutorial

Back in 2002, Microsoft had Outlook Express even for Mac users. It was a useful free application for those who use Hotmail accounts. Outlook Express never made it to OS X. If they want to check their Hotmail messages, Mac OS X users are obliged to use Microsoft Entourage, a commercial application.

Things have changed over years even for Entourage users. They can still check Hotmail messages if accounts are old. But the POP function is no longer free for new Hotmail accounts. For example, if I try to add an account whose e-mail address is junk5278@live.jp… I get an error message that says ‘A Windows Live Hotmail Plus subscription is required.’ (See Screenshot 01-2.) Hotmail Plus? Microsoft says you can get additional Hotmail features including POP access for $19.95 (£14.99, ¥2,510…) a year. (See Screenshot 03.)

In the meantime, Microsoft made an important announcement for Hotmail users as of January 14, 2009. The company says POP access is available to Hotmail users in nine countries including Australia, Canada, German, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S. (See Screenshot 04.) Hmm… Does that mean POP access is available for Hotmail Plus only? How about e-mail accounts with live.com (live.jp, live.co.uk…) as opposed to hotmail.com? Well, let me find out if I can check Hotmail messages through a live.jp account (without Hotmail Plus) that I created several days ago, using Apple’s Mail (v. 3.5). If I can, then I should be able to do the same with Mozilla’s Thunderbird, Eudura and other e-mail applications.

Okay. My e-mail account is junk5278@live.jp. Screenshot 05 shows the Add Account window. So I need to enter this e-mail account in the second text area. Next, let’s move on to the Incoming Mail Server. The POP mail server is pop3.live.com. (See Screenshot 06.) Again, the user name should be junk5278@live.jp. Then let’s move on to the Outgoing Mail Server window. As shown in Screenshot 07, the SMTP server should be smtp.live.com. And don’t forget to check the box for Use Authentication.

In sum, it doesn’t matter what your e-mail domain is. Whether your e-mail domain is hotmail.com, hotmail.co.jp, live.com, live.jp or live.co.uk, the POP server should be pop3.live.com and the SMTP server should be smtp.live.com. Screenshot 08 shows the Account Summary window. Note that SSL is enabled for both incoming and outgoing mail servers. If I switch to the Advanced tab, the port is automatically set to 995. (Screenshot 09.) The default POP3 port is 110 without authentication. And the default SMTP port is 25. But since SSL is enabled, the port should be set to 587.

The top part of Screenshot 09 shows that my POP server is already working. That means Mail has access to pop3.live.com to check my e-mail messages. So let’s make sure that Mail also gains access the SMTP port. So I’ll just type up and send a simple message to junk913@gmail.com. (See Screenshot 10.) And Screenshot 11 shows that I have received this message at junk913@gmail.com.

Well, do I still need Microsoft Entourage?

I follow all of your steps shown here and I am finally was able to get hotmail with Apple mail. The only problem that notice is that I am not able to download or get the folders that I had created in my inbox with hotmail or sub-folders that I had created under inbox. When I use Entourage I am able to sync everything without any problems, but since I am new to MAC I will like to use all the features that Apple has to offer me.

I do not know if you have any answers for downloading the folders?

    Thank you…JC

  2. >The only problem that notice is that I am not able to download or get the folders that I had created…

I know exactly what you mean. And you won’t be because you are using POP (POP3). Those folders come with Hotmail and may not be transferred through POP.

Do you know of any other method that I can use? or my best option is to use Entourage?

  4. If you want to use folders that are created in your Hotmail/Windows Live accounts, the only option you have is to use Entourage. If your Hotmail/Windows Live account is relative new, you will also have to pay $19.95 a year and upgrade it to Hotmail Plus. Furthermore, if you have thousands of messages (at least 2,000 messages) stored in your Hotmail account, Entourage 2008 is likely to fail to access your account (not through POP) and extract all messages.
