MacHouse game rating: 10/10
Dead Space is a third-person action/horror game developed by EA Redwood Shores. Electronic Arts released the game on October 20, 2008. We have made and released more than 10 game play videos for this game. Unless it’s a good game, we wouldn’t make so many game play videos. Anyway, let’s find out how this game works.
First of all, let us tell you how the story of Dead Space evolves briefly. The character that you play in this game is Isaac Clarke. He is onboard the USG Kellion. Other people onboard the USG Kellion are Zach Hammond (the chief security officer), Kendra Daniels (computer specialist) and two more crew members. Their mission is to locate USG Ishimura and to find out the cause of communications blackout.

The USG Ishimura is a mining vessel, which has gone missing in the Aegis System. Daniels and mission leader Hammond will gradually find out that ship’s captain Benjamin Mathius was working on an illegal operation in a prohibited system. The deaths of the crew members onboard the Ishimura and the illegal operation have something to do with the Maker.

An interesting part of Dead Space is characters appearing in the game. Again, you will be playing the character of Isaac Clarke. You will never see his face until the very end of the last chapter (Chapter 12). And he will never speak during the entire game. Meanwhile, they really have chosen very excellent voice actors. Tonantzin Carmelo is the voice of Kendra Daniels, who has a provoking attitude towards Hammond since Day 1. She gradually suspects that Hammond is hiding something important from her and Isaac. In Chapter 4, she calls Hammond a liar and confronts him about the Marker.

Another interesting and fun feature of Dead Space is the weapon upgrade. Remember a 2003 game titled Tron 2.0? It was published by Buena Vista Interactive on Aug 26, 2003. Mac Play released the Mac version of the game, which I played a long time ago. Anyway, an interesting feature of this game is that you can upgrade weapons. Most games don’t have such feature. Dead Space also lets you upgrade weapons. There is an item called Power Node, which can be found inside a blue cabinet. (See Screenshot 08.) You can use this item at a bench. (See Screenshot 09.) Screenshot 10 shows that I have two power nodes. You can upgrade your weapons in terms of damage, number of rounds, reload speed and so forth.

When I first played Dead Space, I was quite amazed by its beautiful graphics. In Chapter 2, Isaac has to enter a Zero-G gravity area to get a shock pad (detonator). And you will see amazing graphic design. (See Screenshot 11.) You will see another scene of amazing graphic design in Chapter 6 where Isaac faces a gigantic creature responsible for poisoning air. (See Screenshot 12.)

Finally, let’s talk about how Dead Space runs with Boot Camp. Our game machine is iMac 2.8 GHz with 2 GB RAM and 256 MB of VRAM with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro. I run this game at a full resolution (1,920 x 1,200 pixels). The game play is quite smooth at this resolution.

By the way, Dead Space has no multiplayer function. If you are looking for a game to play online, Dead Space is probably not for you. Dead Space has 12 missions. For the first 10 chapters, each campaign will end when you take a tram.
One more thing… You can’t deny that the story of Dead Space is similar to that of 1986 movie Aliens. In this movie, Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley and others are ordered to find out what happened at a space colony, with which they have no communications contact for months. There’s a spy, right? The company sent Carter Burke, who knew that people were used as alien carriers. There is a similar spy in Dead Space.
