Mac software review

What an incredible Mac-only app… Live Interior 3D is just like Electronic Arts’ hit game series The Sims. You can create interior design by placing items and changing wallpapers. Or you can start from a scratch with pillars and walls. By the way, Live Interior 3D is developed by the same software company that brings to Mac a great logo design application called Art Text, which we introduced nearly 6 months ago. To be honest, I’ve been using Live Interior 3D for just a couple of hours. So I don’t know whole a lot about it. Anyway, let’s see it works!

When you first start out, Live Interior 3D Assistant will appear. (See Screenshot 01.) If it doesn’t, you can choose it under File. There are several templates without furniture. Or for an easy start, choose Room Interiors at the top. I’ll choose Two Bedroom_03 under 2 Bedroom apt.

After double-clicking on Two Bedroom_03, I’ll get an interior view of the whole house from the top. (See Screenshot 02.) Looking at the bottom of the application window, there are two buttons that I want to click on. One says Switch to 3D View. I also want to click on the button that says Show/Hide Inspector.

If you click on the 3D View button, you will probably find yourself outside the house. (See Screenshot 03.) If that’s the case, click on the 3D View button again to go back to the interior mode and find the camera button at the bottom. (See Screenshot 04.) Then click anywhere to place a camera. Look User Cameras inside Inspector, and you should find the camera that you have just placed. (See Screenshot 05.)

Next, I want to replace wallpapers inside the room where a camera is installed. I’m going to click on the Materials button. (See Screenshot 06.) Then I’ll just need to click on one of the walls and choose a new wallpaper. (See Screenshot 07.) Huh! Changing wallpapers is that easy… (See Screenshot 08.)

The next thing that I want to do is to place a bed. So, on the left column, I need to click on the Furnishing button. There are several categories under the drop-down menu. I want to choose Beds. (See Screenshot 09.) And all I have to do is to just drag and drop one of them into a room.

Also, I want to place a small lamp stand. (See Screenshot 10.) Right, I want to place a night book light or whatever you call. Under the category drop-down menu, I find Lamps. And I’ll choose Bed Table mni. By switching to the interior view, I can place the book light precisely right on the top of the stand. (See Screenshot 11.) Then I need to adjust the location of the book light vertically. So I select the item and increase elevation on Inspector. (See Screenshot 12.)

By the way, there’s a button that looks like a semi-truck on the left column. (See Screenshot 14.) If you click on it, a simple web browser will open up. And it looks like you can download more interior items.

Well, I’m done for the moment. So I want to go ahead and create a QuickTime panoramic thing. After making sure that I have a fixed camera in a room, I choose Export 3D View under File. (See Screenshot 15.)

Finally, let’s create an interior tour movie. Click on the Movie Track button at the bottom. (See Screenshot 17.) I just want the camera to go around the room. So I’ll place a camera at each corner. Finally, select a movie track inside Inspector and click on Record Movie. Then all I have to do is to choose a movie resolution and frame rate. (See Screenshot 18.) Just for you to know is that you don’t have options for the video compressor. You can export your interior tour in QuickTime, and the video will be compressed by MPEG-4 Part II with no audio.

Live Interior 3D is very easy to use. It only took me 15 minutes or so to figure out how it works by and large. You can export your interior design in graphics. The supported graphic formats include BMP, TIFF, JPEG and PNG. Incredibly, you can also export it in QuickTime to produce panoramic and interior tour movies.

There are a couple of disappointing things about Live Interior 3D that we have observed. No. 1, you may not always be able to save project files successfully. I tried to open a file that I saved earlier. And it doesn’t open. It looks like Live Interior 3D failed to save it completely. And I didn’t get an error message. No. 2, when you create a camera track, you can only rotate bezier curves. But you can’t pull or push handles.
